What makes a Hot Mamma? Positive energy, inner beauty (and let’s face it- when someone has inner beauty, they also have outer beauty), someone who balances life well, and no matter what life throws at them- they see the glass half full. Our Hot Mamma’s are working moms who “have it all”- family, career and happiness. And in true OCMAMMA style- our Hot Mamma’s are also…HOT.
Our hope is that you pat our Hot Mamma’s on the back for being able to juggle it all (with a smile on their face), and when possible- support their businesses. In every HM Spotlight you will be introduced to our HM of the Month, their kiddo and their business. If you choose to contact the HM (and we hope you do), please don’t forget to tell ‘em where you heard about their hot-ness.
Name: Suzy Martyn
Children’s Names and Ages: Faith (11), Grace (9), and Hope (6)
Job Title: Author, Parenting Consultant, Daycare Provider
Company Name and address: Mother’s Friend; P.O. Box 1020, Cypress, CA 90630

Description of company you own or work for: Mother’s Friend offers many services, including one-on-one parenting consultation, bookings for speaking engagements for schools, churches, and mom’s groups, and has many resources including a parenting book called Enjoying the Ride: A Parenting Journey from Birth to Ten. It’s a practical and inspirational guide for parenting. In the works is also a book on Sleep for babies, toddlers, and kids up to age 4.
How does your business help other moms and/or kids? It serves as a support and resource to not only moms but all parents! And, of course kids indirectly benefit through the support their parents receive.
How do you balance work and kids? It’s a conscious choice every day. Do you continue with the plethora of items on your to-do list or do you stop to connect with your daughter who seems to need a listening ear? Can that load of laundry wait so that you can help with homework, or better yet, can your daughter help you with the load of laundry so you can be free quicker to help her with homework? Will it work to re-schedule your meeting because your daughter’s violin recital has been rescheduled? Choices. Hopefully my priorities are reflected in the choices I make every day.
What is your favorite activity with your kiddos? I love spending time with each of my daughters doing what each of them loves to do. For Faith, it’s grabbing something, anything sweet, to eat. For Grace, it’s chatting while getting a pedicure, and for Hope, it’s taking a picnic to the park.
What is one piece of advice that you could share with other moms? As all moms know, the time just passes by too quickly and seems to pass more quickly the older your child gets. Of course, you are not getting older…only your child. Sounds simple and like something you’ve heard before, but truly do take time to smell the roses. Don’t let life pass you by. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Okay, that one doesn’t apply, but I just had to slip in one more idiom before I was done.
What is your favorite online site for kids or moms? OC Mamma, of course. And no one even told me to say that. Also, Parenthacks.com and MyBusyDays.com are great.
What is one of your favorite books about parenting? Besides my own? I love How to Talk So Your Kids Will Listen and Listen So Your Kids Will Talk by Adele Faber (Author), Elaine Mazlish (Author). They also have another great one called Siblings Without Rivalry. Both are so practical with real life scenarios and actual word for word dialogue that serve as great examples to follow.
What is your biggest guilty pleasure? Hiring someone to clean my house!
If you won the lotto today, what would be the first thing you would spend money on? (assuming you have to buy yourself something.. I know, it is a stretch) A full time maid! Okay, now you know my heart. But, truly I think if I HAD to spend part of it on me, I would splurge and book an entire Disney Cruise Line and invite my entire extended family and friends to cruise the seas and party together! I’d go too, so that counts, right?
